IPX VS IPv6?
NOT A FAIR FIGHT.
IPX and IPv6 are often placed in the same sentence because both are networking protocols. But they did not solve the same problem, were not built for the same ecosystem, and are not consecutive versions of one technology.
01 / WHAT IPX WAS
A protocol suite for the NetWare world.
Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) was the network-layer protocol in the Novell NetWare IPX/SPX suite. It descended from Xerox Network Systems concepts and became widely used in LANs during the late 1980s and 1990s. Its strength was practical local-network operation in the NetWare ecosystem; its reach was tied to that ecosystem.
02 / WHAT IPv6 IS
The Internet Protocol’s standardized successor.
IPv6 is the 128-bit successor to IPv4, standardized by the IETF for the global Internet. It preserves the IP role: a common network-layer protocol across independently operated networks. RFC 8200 defines the current IPv6 base specification and explicitly describes IPv6 as the successor to IPv4.

04 / THE IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
IPv6 was not “the next IPX.”
IPX competed with TCP/IP in many enterprise LAN deployments at a time when protocol stacks were less consolidated. IPv6 evolves TCP/IP itself. That distinction explains the outcome: IPv6 can be deployed alongside IPv4 because both are part of the Internet protocol family; IPX required its own compatible stack, tooling, routing, and application support.
